In de eerste helft van de zeventiende eeuw ondergingen de Nederlandse koloni\u00ebn in het Atlantische gebied een turbulente periode van oorlogvoering. Vanaf omstreeks 1670 kwam de West in rustiger vaarwater en werd geleidelijk aan een \u2018nieuwe maatschappij\u2019 gecre\u00eberd. Daarbij ging het in het Cara\u00efbisch gebied om de Nederlandse Antillen (Cura\u00e7ao, Aruba, Bonaire, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius en Saba) en om vestigingen aan de Wilde Kust (Suriname, Berbice, Essequebo en Demerary). In deze gebieden werden plantages in allerlei soorten en maten aangelegd, die slechts konden renderen door de inzet van uit West\u2010Afrika aangevoerde slaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Het eigendom en het management van de plantages en van andere bedrijven waren niet alleen in handen van Nederlanders, maar ook van onder meer uit Brazili\u00eb afkomstige Sefardische Joden, van Franse Hugenoten en van Engelsen. Als gevolg van deze situatie ontstond een rijk geschakeerd palet aan multiculturele relaties, dat niettemin sterk gelaagd was naar juridische status (vrij of onvrij), kleur, rijkdom en godsdienst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1814 moest Nederland, ten gevolge van de oorlogen van de Franse Revolutie en Napoleon, bij verdrag de vestigingen Berbice, Essequebo en Demerary aan Engeland afstaan. Deze gebieden werden door de Engelsen samengevoegd in Brits Guyana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Met de afschaffing van de slavernij in 1863 werd een fundamentele stap gezet op de weg naar de ontmanteling van deze \u2018klassieke\u2019 maatschappelijke formatie van de West\u2010Indische koloni\u00ebn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Het project The Dutch in the Caribbean World, C. 1670\u2010C. 1870 bestaat uit twee delen. Enerzijds de voornamelijk Engelstalige archiefgids met relevante bronnen, die referenties aan archiefcollecties berustend in binnen\u2010 en buitenland (Nederland, Suriname, Cura\u00e7ao, Engeland en Guyana) bevat.
