Reading Room Rules

Welcome to the National Archives of Curaçao, where a wealth of information is preserved. Many archival records are fragile, so it is important that we follow a few rules when consulting them. Together, we can ensure that our cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.

You must register at the reception desk upon each visit. You will need a valid ID (driver’s license, passport, or sédula). By signing the registration form, you agree to these rules.

The use of archival records is monitored. For this purpose, camera surveillance is in place in the reading rooms. Upon leaving the building, security may approach you to inspect your bags, folders, and similar items.

  1. Handbags and cell phones are not permitted in the reading rooms.
    All bags and phones must be stored in the lockers next to the entrance desk.
  2. The use of ballpoint pens and fountain pens is not permitted.
    You may use a notepad and pencil to take notes. The use of laptops and notebooks is permitted (220-volt power supply).
  3. Archival documents, books, magazines, and newspapers may not be removed from the reading room.
  4. Please remember that future generations will also want to view these archival documents.
    Therefore, please avoid:
    • Creasing or wrinkling the pages;
    • Licking your fingers when turning the pages;
    • Browsing through an archival document;
    • Leaning on or placing objects on archival documents;
    • Reorganizing loose items or removing labels and binding materials; Placing archival documents on the floor.
    • Note: Please report any damage or misplaced archival records to the staff.
  5. You may not have more than three archival records on the table at a time.
    The records on your table are your responsibility. When requesting archival records, please allow for a waiting time of approximately half an hour.
  6. Be considerate of other visitors.
    In the reading room, you are requested to maintain silence, except when you wish to ask a staff member a question. Respect the privacy of other visitors.
  7. Eating, drinking, and smoking are not permitted in the National Archives.
  8. Reproduction and publication.

Visitors may use a camera or smartphone to make up to three reproductions. An administrative fee applies. After paying this fee, the camera or smartphone may be retrieved from the locker next to the entrance desk. The use of tripods and/or lighting is not permitted. Archival documents must remain flat on the table. Audio or video recordings are not permitted. Please consult the reading room staff if you wish to make more than three reproduction

It is not permitted to publish or disclose any material from the archives that could disproportionately harm the interests of living, identifiable individuals. When publishing research data from the National Archives, you must correctly cite the sources. If necessary, consult an archivist for assistance.
You must donate one copy of your publication to the National Archives.
In the event of a violation of the above rules, the management of the National Archives may decide to deny the visitor further access to the archives.
